BiographyRonald Baynes is a Professor of Pharmacology at NC State’s College of Veterinary Medicine. He has taught and conducted research in quantitative pharmacology and toxicology for more than 20 years, and prior to his current appointment, he worked as a toxicologist at Syracuse Research Corporation in Atlanta, Georgia. Baynes’ research focus area is pharmacokinetics and the use of comparative animal models and computational models to better understand drug/chemical uptake and disposition in the body. He develops Quantitative Structure Activity Relationship (QSAR) models to inform risk assessment of skin exposure to chemical mixtures. His laboratory is also using pharmacometric methods to quantify drug disposition in food animal species in various age groups and diseased populations to better understand drug efficacy and drug residues in milk, meat, and related food items. Through contaminant and veterinary drug residue pharmacology, and the development of novel pharmacokinetics modeling approaches, he works in risk management of veterinary drug residues via the national Food Animal Residue Avoidance Databank (FARAD) program. Over the years, Baynes’ research at NC State has been supported by several NIH, USDA, US DOD and industrial grants, and he has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters pertaining to his teaching, extension and research activities. As well as training veterinary graduate students in his laboratory, he helps prepare undergraduate and DVM students for careers in veterinary research through several honors and summer programs.
